Dana and I enjoyed dinner with friends Joe & Leslie at our favorite Italian cafe in Chicago last night (Osteria de Pizza Metro, wow!), and while I brought a rather disappointing bottle of Salice Salantino from Puglia (where's my earth, my Old World dirt?), Joe and Leslie brought the Bogle Vineyards Petite Sirah (2010)--and I loved this little gem from northern California the second it hit my mouth. The texture is full, rich and tannic, very pleasing. The initial attack brings blackberries, with that flavor transitioning seamlessly, naturally to vanilla bean, before closing with soft herbaceous undertones (to the fruit and vanilla). There is a wonderful unity to this wine; it's "tight," coherent, whole, from start to finish, like a neat little tasty package wrapped in a bow. Even though it didn't pair with my food--calamari fritti with a tomato-based sauce--it showed some versatility and I was more than happy to continue drinking it. Would be great with meats...roast turkey with gravy or lamb stew come to mind as strong possibilities. The length isn't remarkable, and my palette tends to lean more toward earthiness than fruitiness, but this wine has such harmony (and good complexity for the money), that it's impossible not to enjoy it. And at about $11.00 a bottle, the Bogle Vineyards Petite Sirah is one California wine I will keep on hand for everyday consumption. Available locally at Lincoln Park Market, Binny's Beverage Depot and other stores. Calling this one a +MUST TRY+!

Terraced vineyards above Monterosso al Mare, Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy, one of the most beautiful places on earth. We've enjoyed the dry white wines native to the region, paired with pesto, a Ligurian specialty.
