CORTESE/GAVI: ITALY

Toledana Gavi di Gavi (by La Toledana Gavi Winery)
Italia: Piemonte (Gavi)
Cortese (white) 2006
Est $12.00
85
Had this Italian white from Gavi (Piedmont region) at Basil Leaf Cafe on Clark Street ($8.00 a glass). At first, I mistook the name of the locale (Gavi) for the grapel, but learned that Cortese is the local grape from which this vino is made. Was happy to try something I'd never had before...but this one was a disappointment, at least for my palette. A very closed nose to start: even after letting it sit for a while the bouquet just didn't open up. As this wine hits your lips, it does have a nice 'thick' quality to it...a substance, with almost a hint of sparkle (like a tingle). But then, after a slight citrus flavor, it falls flat, ending with a floral or herbal taste that I just did not enjoy (a feint bitterness). The finish is abrupt, too. Big fan of Italian whites, which I think are interesting and often overlooked. But no so much with the Toledana Gavi di Gavi.

Terraced vineyards above Monterosso al Mare, Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy, one of the most beautiful places on earth. We've enjoyed the dry white wines native to the region, paired with pesto, a Ligurian specialty.
